Yah-whoee! Get ready for a night filled with action-packed rodeo photography tales from our guest speaker, professional photographer Kay Levie!
Thinking that rodeo photography is not your thing? Think again. The techniques used to create stunning rodeo images can be put to use in many photo situations such as sports photography, wildlife capture and can help you create photojournalism award-winners!
Easily one of the fastest sports to photograph, rodeo photography encompasses a wide range of photo opportunities. The action itself is an incredible act to not only photograph well but often to survive. As a photographer you need to be knowledgeable, physically fit and very quick on your feet. Good medical insurance helps.
Kay Levie will take you into the world of rodeo photography: what it takes to earn the right to go into the arena to photograph, what goes on behind and in front of the chutes, life on the road, equipment, the long hours, the wonderful people. Speaker Bio:
After exploring several science majors in college including premed and geology and not finding a calling that held her, Kay turned to her long love of photography and earned an Associate Degree in photography at Grossmont College in La Mesa, CA. After graduation, she became a professional photographer specializing in the photography of fine art for artists and galleries.
Most of her work was published in brochures for various galleries in the United States and Europe. At the same time, she also took stock photos for an agency and had photos published in text books and trade publications.
Branching out as a free lance photographer and photo journalist, her work took her to other countries to photograph everything from mining operations in Australia to Andalusian horses in Spain. For seven years she was a carded rodeo photographer working with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and has had numerous photos published.
Along the way, she volunteered to teach photography to adults and children through various community agencies including assisting with the instruction of elementary school children in Borrego Springs through the afterschool art program. In addition, Kay has held teaching workshops for adults at the Borrego Art Institute and has been a working instructor with Rock Creek Pack Station, taking students into the High Sierras and to a mustang preserve. She also served as a judge for five years with the Anza-Borrego Foundation Photo Contest.
Kay has exhibited her work many times at various galleries and currently works at shooting and printing artistic photos for exhibition, primarily with the Borrego Art Institute with which she is affiliated and a member of the Board of Directors. She is a member of the American Society of Media Photographers and the National Association of Photoshop Professionals.
